About Me
I have been a dedicated student of yoga for the last 15 years, during which I became a certified teacher in multiple areas. I practice several styles of energy healing and received certification in Reiki 9 years ago. I use various types of meditation (breathe, mantra, mindfulness) that I learned starting at an early age. I am forever a student of life and always practicing to be the best person I can be.
Tradition
I was born in India. At age 6, my family moved from Bombay, India to NYC. Five years later we moved to Westchester where I grew up. I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and then worked in the fashion industry for ten years in Manhattan. After my first son was born I left the fashion industry.
Family
Since then, I have been focused on raising my three boys with my husband in Armonk, NY. Being responsible for taking care of others has helped grow my own awareness. Each day my children teach me a lesson, either about myself or the world. I am so blessed to be part of their journey in this world and grateful my continued learning. Being a mother is what inspired me to find yoga. Practicing yoga inspires me to be a best I can be inside and out.
I realized that my involvement in my family’s life has a great impact on them as well as our community and the world. As Mahatma Gandhi said “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
Community – Westchester, NY
I volunteer with several school and non-profit groups in my community. One of my fundamental beliefs is “it takes a village to raise a child” and that we all have a hand in shaping our children’s future. A favorite accomplishment of mine is creating and managing Global Village Day for the local school district. It is a celebration of world cultures and based my belief in the value of collaboration and communication in cultural diversity.
Other activities that I enjoy include skiing, hiking, scuba diving, traveling and running around with my kids.
I wish to express my gratitude to the following teachers Osi Mizrahi, Susan Rubin, Roey Ficaro, Lakshmi Voelker, Jillian Pransky and Dr. Steffany Moonaz. They continue to support me on my path to serve others.
With gratitude, Alka Kaminer – Namaste
Testimonials
Alka is a wonderful Yoga instructor; honestly, this is the first time ever that someone “got through” to me as far as “how to breathe” in a manner that does actually relieve stress and anxiety. After a session including stretching, massaging, movements, etc I feel more toned and rejuvenated! – Linda M.
I had the most wonderful experience. Feeling sore, drained, scattered and tired of winter, I went for a Reiki session. It was such a deep, powerful experience. To my delight, I went home excited and woke up the next morning feeling renewed. I have been feeling better ever since. Thank you Alka, you are truly gifted! – Dianne P
Since this is my first experience with chair yoga I had no idea what to expect. I am amazed how much better I feel after each class. My aching back seems more relaxed because of the stretching, deep breathing and meditation. Alka is a very patient and kind person, and a great yoga teacher. Thank you so much, Alka. – Ingrid S.
I attend other yoga classes and I feel that Alka gives her attention to each individual, not only the entire class. Exercise is extremely important and I feel much better after her class. – Helen C.
